Books and Coffee
While out walking last week, we noticed a new phenomenon for us -- Children of all ages on the streets selling text books. In Montenegro, students must buy their text books -- and they are NOT cheap. If Christian were to buy all his books for the year for all the classes, it would cost around $150. If there are several kids in the family, it adds up rather quickly. So students clean up the work books, erase all the extra writing and try to sell them. This picture only shows a few students; but in the evening, there were 100's of students selling their books -- and 100's of parents looking to save some Euros!
Another typical sight in Montenegro, folks at coffee houses -- called "Ka-Fee-chs". It does not matter the hour of day (except really early), they are crowded with folks. It does not matter the temperature -- they still drink coffee. Some love the "Turkish" coffee, some "instant" (Neskafe) and others "American" coffee Espressos, Lattes, and Cappuccinos, are also very popular. Coffee is very much a part of the culture here in Montenegro.
Next week we will host the first of what we hope are many "Coffee Houses" at the American Center of Cultural Exchange.
